Final Performance Piece
ROKJIT, 2023
Stories In Motion, Musuem of Moving Image, NY Feb 2023Exile Exhibition, The New School, NY Nov 2023
ROKJIT [โรคจิต] is a Thai term used to describe all types of mental illness, regardless of whether or not they involve psychosis, which can be a misleading use of the term.
ROKJIT explores the intersection of art, technology, and emotion through an immersive and experimental installation that invites audiences to explore the artist's inner world. Drawing on the artist's personal experiences with isolation, cultural norms, and abuse, the installation incorporates sensors, cameras, and rendering programs to collect the artist's physical data as she performs. Through her interactions with technology, the artist translates her raw emotions into abstract visuals and sounds that create a thought-provoking journey for the audience. The installation serves as a powerful representation of the artist's battles with depression and the persistent, intrusive thoughts that plague her mind.

I was inspired by the waves of Huahin, Thailand as the peaceful sound and sight of the waves helped me heal. As I see the currents affected by wind and storm, it helped me reflect on how other people’s judgment of my illness also affects me in the same way. The fluidity and movement of the waves serve as a metaphor for occurring intrusive thoughts.
The use of water as a motif holds a significant meaning for me, as it represents not just the healing power of nature but also the acceptance of the ups and downs of life before death. This art piece acts as a reminder to myself of the strength and perseverance that I summoned so that I could survive.
My installation piece serves as a powerful representation of my personal battles with depression and the persistent, intrusive thoughts that plague my mind. Through my carefully choreographed performance, I tell the story of a woman's quest to find inner peace amid her struggles. Through her movements, I depict the challenging journey she endures to attain a fleeting moment of tranquility. Yet, ultimately, she discovers that true peace can be found even in the most uncomfortable positions, and she emerges victorious, having achieved a moment of silence that is hard to come by. Although others may interpret my work differently, I hope that it will serve as a refuge for the community, a sanctuary where individuals can confront and contemplate their innermost thoughts and emotions without fear of judgment or restriction. Through this shared experience, we can come together and find solace in our collective humanity, discovering that we are not alone in our struggles, but rather bound together by the universal experience of the human condition.
ROKJIT 1.0 AT MUSUEM OF MOVING IMAGES FOR “STORIES IN MOTION”
Recording of installation piece (V1) with audience interacting with piece on screen using phone as controller
The first iteration of my work was displayed at Musuem of Moving Images in Astoria, Queens. In this iteration, the body movements were detected through the phone which triggers different particle reactions.
PROCESS & TECHNOLOGY
Iteration 1
On my first iteration, I started off by creating the backdrop painting using acrylic and pvc.
Then, I experimented with projection mapping, Touchdesigner and my computer’s webcam. There were many issues with this set up because the performer cannot be infront of the projection as the webcam cannot distinguish between the human body’s movement and the particle’s movements.
Iteration 2
On my second iteration, I experimented with the iPhone ARKIT to track the performer’s movements. This became Rokjit V1 and was installed in the Musuem of Moving Image in February 2023.
Iteration 3
On the final iteration, I recallibrated the particle system to the datastream fed in by Azure Kinect. The particle system reacts based on the signal that was captured by Azure Kinect.
